Exploring the Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve

The Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve includes two different protected areas in Eastern South Carolina. Each preserve is home to a river; one with the Great Pee Dee River and the other with the Little Pee Dee River.

Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve

The Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve sits to the north of I-95 in between Florence and Bennettsville. This 2,725-acre protected park is home to threatened plant species, the Johannes Kolb Archaeological Site, and seven miles of river frontage. You’ll find a variety of wildlife that calls this beautiful outdoor paradise home, and there are miles of trails for you to explore. Hiking is the main draw here. Most trails have light traffic, so this is a great spot to get out and be one with nature.

The Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve is open during all hours of daylight. Here is the best route to get there from Abingdon Manor.

Little Pee Dee Heritage Preserve

If you’re searching for a wider variety of outdoor activities, head south of Latta to the Little Pee Dee Heritage Preserve. This protected area is more than triple the size of its sister park, with over 9,000 acres of forest and wetlands. There are plenty of fantastic hiking trails through the protected area, but the best way to experience the Little Pee Dee Heritage Preserve is on the water. Rent a kayak or canoe to meander your way through the beautiful marshlands that played a vital role in the Revolutionary War. Who knows, you might even spot a family of otters playing along the banks or an alligator resting. You can also fish here as long as you have a South Carolina fishing license!

The Little Pee Dee Heritage Preserve is open from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Here is the best route to get there from our Inn.
