Everything You Need to Know About a Road trip From Greenville, SC

Newberry

The first stop on your road trip from Greenville, SC, is the town of Newberry! While the beautiful downtown area has plenty of shops lining the streets, there are a few highlights in the area that are worth a visit. Take a stroll through the Wells Japanese Garden. It’s a fantastic spot to sit down and meditate while you enjoy the variety of plants in this little slice of zen that’s on the National Register of Historic Places. You should also take a drive through the West Boundary Street Historic District, where you’ll find mid-19th-century architecture galore, especially at the Frederick Nance House plantation-style home on Jessica Avenue. Before you get back on the highway, stop by the Enoree River Vineyards for a local wine tasting!

Columbia

You can choose to go around the Palmetto State’s capital city on your road trip from Greenville, but it’s full of museums and more attractions than most cities around the state. The Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, and South Carolina Military Museum all offer fantastic experiences that allow you to dive into the state’s rich history.

Guests can also take a tour around the South Carolina Statehouse, where you can see some of the state’s highest-ranking lawmakers walking around in between meetings and daily duties. If you prefer to stay outside and explore the great outdoors, the Riverbanks Botanical Gardens and Riverfront Park are perfect for a breath of fresh air.

Camden

Camden is the third stop along your road trip from Greenville. It’s only a 40-minute drive from Columbia, so you can spend plenty of time taking in the charming town’s rich Revolutionary War heritage. There are several museums worth checking out, like the Historic Camden Revolutionary War site that commemorates the pivotal Battle of Camden. You can also explore the Kershaw-Cornwallis House, the National Steeplechase Museum, and Goodale State Park!

Bishopville

Continue on your journey from Greenville, SC, to your next step, Bishopville. This tiny village is only 30 minutes east of Camden, but it still has a few hidden treasures. The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is simply stunning. Longtime Bishopville resident Pearl Fryar decided to create whimsical and beautiful works of art out of shrubs in his yard back in the 1980s and still does to this day. His extensive grounds are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The South Carolina Cotton Museum and Lee State Park are also worth a visit while you’re in town.
