The Top Places to Stop on the Way to Myrtle Beach
Mullins
Mullins is a great first stop on the way to Myrtle Beach. The main attraction in this classic small southern town is the South Carolina Tobacco Museum. It highlights Eastern South Carolina’s once-booming tobacco farming industry with exhibits featuring old tobacco ads and artifacts, donations and real documents from past residents, and models depicting tobacco holdings. The museum is a fantastic way to learn about an integral part of local South Carolina heritage. Another great place to stop in Mullins is Webster Manor. Travel west on US-76 for about 10 minutes to Marion, where you’ll find an incredibly charming town with small shops and moss-draped trees lining the streets. Named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, this is a great place to stop on the way to Myrtle Beach. Go for a nice stroll through downtown before continuing on your way.Conway
Head south on US-501 for 40 minutes to Conway. This small city is synonymous with Myrtle Beach and Coastal Carolina University, but it has a few hidden gems to reward visitors who stop on their way to the beach. The downtown area is full of great restaurants where you can grab some gourmet food or an ice-cold libation before taking a relaxing walk along the new Conway Riverwalk. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, there is an entrance to Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge about 15 minutes south of Conway where you can view a variety of animals and birds in a beautiful natural habitat. Two gorgeous sights await you in Murrells Inlet: Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington State Beach. Technically, you have to pass Myrtle Beach, but this 25-minute journey south is worth it. Brookgreen Gardens should be on everyone's list of places to stop on the way to Myrtle Beach. This oasis off of Highway 17 has a renowned botanical garden that highlights the flora of South Carolina. There is also a sculpture garden, Lowcountry zoo, and history abound at this fantastic stop near Myrtle Beach. If you want to avoid the beach crowds of Myrtle, you’ll love spending time at Huntington Beach State Park. Three miles of pristine South Carolina beach is the main attraction here in addition to tree-shaded paths and excellent bird watching.
